Uhm, maybe WTF should be replaced by “.. And How I Hoped It Should Be Offered”.
The latest version of Microsoft Windows, Windows 7, was released a while ago. I’m a Mac user at home, and Ubuntu user at work, but this release of Microsoft Windows, and the many words I heard about it, made me want to try this particular version.
OK read, I have not used Windows 7 yet, when I was writing this.
So, the first thing I figured I would check is what editions are they offering. To my shock, I see all these (ref: Wikipedia):
- Windows 7 Starter
- Windows 7 Home Basic
- Windows 7 Home Premium
- Windows 7 Professional
- Windows 7 Enterprise
- Windows 7 Ultimate
Horror! How am I going to choose from them? And that does not include the upgrade editions from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (ref: Wikipedia).
Although they have a comparison chart widely available (ref: Wikipedia), it still makes me scratch my balls.
Here’s a little thought, what I think they should do:
- Offer very few editions, say maybe Basic, Home, Professional.
- Have a marketplace or store of some sort, allowing users to get what extra features they want in their edition, with a price (I can’t say free can I, Microsoft?)
I would prefer that, it reduces all the complexity of choosing that many different editions, which is a pain, in my opinion.
What do you think?
